Alex had been supported by Sandra, a POhWER advocate throughout a series of child protection meetings.
Alex has ongoing mental health problems and because this caused capability issues, her child lived with her grandparents.
Alex was frustrated by her contact with professionals from Children, Schools and Families and the community mental health team and found it difficult to communicate with them.
Sandra worked with Alex to work through what she needed to stay healthy and how she could keep in contact with her family.
As a result, Alex was able to develop a relationship with her mental health professional, found a support group and was able to get some psychological therapy to improve her mental health.
She was also able to request and agree access arrangements to her family and child that she felt comfortable with.
Sandra also helped Alex to explore leisure facilities and activities she could do with her child to add value and meaning to the time they spent together.
Alex was comfortable with the arrangements and continued to develop her relationship with her mental health professional. Her child was cared for in a safe place and had a meaningful relationship with her mother, with whom she spent quality time.
This is just one example of how POhWER works with people to help them stay physically healthy and active – and to ensure their children do too.
