All-Party Prison Health report sets out radical but necessary agenda for mental health

"The mental health of prisoners in Britain needs urgent attention and radical action," Sainsbury Centre for Mental Health chief executive Angela Greatley said today.
Responding to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Prison Health report, The Mental Health Problem in UK HM Prisons, Angela Greatley said: "Today's report shows just how much needs to be done to improve mental health in prison and to prevent those with severe conditions from being in prison in the first place.
"There is now a mass of clear evidence that prisoners are getting inadequate mental health care. Despite recent advances in the creation of inreach teams, there are unacceptable gaps in care, especially for those with depression and anxiety.
"Today's report should be the start of a new type of debate about how we prevent people with severe mental health problems from going into prison and the value of offering those in prison a decent standard of care. Prison mental health care has been second best for too long. It is now time to invest in putting that inequality right."
