Just 5% of hospitals in England and Wales require staff to undertake any specialist dementia training, research by the Royal College of Psychiatrists shows. The study of more than 200 hospitals found that eight in 10 had no system in place to ensure ward staff were aware of a patient's condition and how it might affect their care.

It shows how the Government has developed its thinking in the light of the 6,000 responses to the White Paper, ‘Equity and excellence: Liberating the NHS’, and sets out a timetable for implementation.

Circle has been chosen to run 266-bed Hinchingbrooke hospital in Huntingdon, which has debts of about £40 million. The firm, which operates a John Lewis style-partnership model for its employees, will be responsible for clinical services including an emergency department, cancer treatment and a maternity ward. It will also run non-clinical services.

Only a third of elderly patients who are admitted to hospital for an operation get good care, according to a report from the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death. The routine analysis of outcomes for patients set up by the medical royal colleges found that the needs of elderly people were not often fully understood by doctors.

The annual report of the NHS Choices website said there has been a 10 per cent increase in visits to the site this year, compared to 2009. A team at Imperial College London calculated this saves the NHS £44m a year.

All deaths in hospital and within a month of discharge are to be monitored under a new system in England. The scheme is being introduced in April following the Stafford Hospital scandal when the NHS was accused of being slow to react to the high number of deaths.

The medicines watchdog, NICE, is to lose its power to turn down new medicines for use on the NHS. It will give advice on which drugs are effective, but will not decide whether patients should be given treatments their doctor recommends, the Department of Health has confirmed. Instead, groups of GPs will decide whether a drug should be funded or not.
